We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Functional Skills Maths Tutor to join our education team at HMP Stocken. This is an opportunity to deliver high-quality teaching that supports learners in gaining essential qualifications, improving confidence, and developing the skills needed to progress into employment, training, and positive futures.

Working within a prison education environment, you will play a vital role in helping learners overcome barriers, achieve recognised qualifications, and unlock their potential through education.


The Role

As a Functional Skills Maths Tutor, you will deliver engaging and inclusive City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. You will work with groups of up to 12 learners, adapting your teaching approach to meet a wide range of abilities, educational backgrounds, and learning needs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering Functional Skills Maths lessons from Entry Level 1 to Level 2.
  • Conducting initial assessments and using BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points.
  • Developing and maintaining Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).
  • Creating engaging and innovative lesson plans that support learner progression and achievement.
  • Supporting learners to prepare for examinations and assessments.
  • Tracking learner progress and maintaining accurate records.
  • Using adaptive teaching techniques to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Supporting learners requiring additional learning support and reasonable adjustments.
  • Promoting numeracy, literacy, and wider employability skills within the learning environment.
  • Working closely with support staff, education teams, and prison colleagues to achieve positive learner outcomes.
  • Contributing to quality assurance processes and maintaining high educational standards.
  • Ensuring safeguarding, equality, diversity, and inclusion remain at the heart of your teaching practice.

About You

We are seeking a committed educator who believes in the power of education to transform lives.

Essential

  • Level 3 qualification in Mathematics.
  • Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS, or equivalent), or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths qualifications.
  • Strong lesson planning, classroom management, and learner engagement skills.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to support a wide range of learner abilities and needs.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and administrative skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and learner success.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate pre-employment clearances.

Desirable

  • Experience within prison education, adult learning, further education, or vocational training environments.
  • Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools.
  • Understanding of Ofsted's Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
  • Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards one.
  • Experience supporting learners with additional learning needs.
